Spencer Hill Chardonnay and Fume Top 100 wines of 2015

Both Spencer Hill Chardonnay and Fume Blanc have been selected as great examples of what can be produced from Upper Moutere grapes. To have gathered two spots in the Metro Magazine Top 100 wines of 2015 shows that our long term commitment to making these styles is always appreciated. It sets Spencer Hill apart from many other New Zealand wineries.

Latitude 41 Nelson Chardonnay Viva Magazine Best Value

Latitude 41 2014 Nelson Chardonnay has been selected as the only Best Value Chardonnay in the Viva Top 50 wines of 2015. This is the second time in three years one of Spencer Hill’s wines has been selected in this same category.

Latitude 41 Sauvignon Blanc Gold Medal

Spencer Hill’s Latitude 41 2014 Nelson Sauvignon Blanc has won Gold at the prestigious Sommelier Wine Awards in London. Comments by the judges: “Great typicity alongside a welcoming easy-drinking persona won Spencer Hill Gold. ‘Fatter style, a little restrained but zesty, attractive and elegant,’ said team leader Annette Scarfe MW, with Vittorio Gentile of Theo Randall at The InterContinental Hotel adding: ‘Floral, shy nose, with some lime and gooseberry.’ ‘A food wine – a good substitute for Sancerre,’ said Hakkasan Group’s Christine Parkinson.”

Viva Magazine – Jo Burzynska’s rose picks

Spencer Hill Nelson Blanc de Pinot Noir 2014 Spencer Hill has gone out to make a serious rosé, sourcing grapes from its prime pinot noir vineyard and using the quality skin contact method. The resulting wine is a vivid, deep pink that is full bodied with ripe red berry and cherry fruit, a mineral note and attractively fresh finish. A rosé with more complexity than most. Available from selected wine stores.

2011 Spencer Hill Coastal Ridge Chardonnay

Reaching for the stars 2011 Spencer Hill Coastal Ridge Chardonnay, $35 Nelson winemaker Phil Jones makes a mean chardonnay. And I don’t mean he’s sparing us the big bodied, creamy flavours which characterise this most popular of all white wines. On the contrary. This is driven by a tangy taste with savoury, oat meal aromas, ripe peacharine flavours and a long finish. From specialist stores or www.spencerhillwine.com/ Joelle Thomson – The Dominion

Spencer Hill Nelson Chardonnay 2010

Lots of palate appeal from the stone fruit and oak flavours enhanced by the still youthful acidity. Balanced with medium plus length. A very drinkable example 4 stars Cameron Douglas MW

Goose Bay Blanc de Pinot Noir 2013

($25): A lovely, fun, refreshing, slightly off dry rosé wine that is uncomplicated but not simplistic and nicely balanced, with soft but present acidity, sweet ripe strawberry, raspberry and subtle watermelon notes, and some lovely, vibrant aromatics of berries, peach, plum, and flowers. Delightful to sip and savor, or even to gulp. (Mevushal) Joshua London, Jewish Week

Goose Bay Sauvignon Blanc

88-90 Points “COLOR-light golden; NOSE-great nose, really aromatic, little fruit (boysenberry) & cat pee; TASTE-very good, not too grapefruity, nice acidity & balance, like a $20 Sancerre” GV-89/90 Wine Library- Gary Vaynerchuk

Latitude 41 Pinot Noir

Bottled with a ‘Zork’ closure – an easy to remove plastic stopper with tear off grab handle. A blend of Nelson and Marlborough fruit, fermented with wild yeasts and aged in French oak for nine months. Fine, light ruby colour, with refined aromatics suggesting ripe berry fruits, briar and a touch of woodland undergrowth. There’s a slick of vanilla too, and a hint of espresso. On the palate the fruit is a little lighter, with sweeter tannins giving this for me, a more harmonious finish. Lovely. Tom Cannavan’s wine-pages.com

Latitude 41 Sauvignon Blanc

Labelled as coming from ‘South Island’ fruit, this is in fact a blend from Spencer Hills’ Nelson vineyards. Part of the juice was fermented and aged for two months on ‘high spice and vanilla French oak.’ The nose does display a little of that spiciness in the background, but really this is dominated by typical notes of tropical fruit and a certain gooseberry vivaciousness, with touches of lychee and mango. On the palate it is concentrated, powerful wine. Not as flamboyant as one might have expected from the nose, the fruit is actually quite subdued and savoury, with a bit of peach-juice sweetness on the mid-palate, and then a lemony core of acidity pushing through. This is a chewy, big mouthful of Sauvignon in quite a serious style.- Tom Cannavan’s wine-pages.com

Wall Street Journal

Wine-lovers are excited about New Zealand’s Pinot Noir and this is a good one, with a haunting nose of earth, pepper and a little funk and a silky, fruity taste. Best red of the tasting. We also liked Goose Bay’s 2005 Sauvignon Blanc , which was crisp, juicy and very easy to enjoy.  Wall Street Journal

Superstar Chardonnays

“Ask a Kiwi wine afficionado to name five of New Zealand’s superstar chardonnays and you can probably safely bet that the list will include Te Mata Elston, Neudorf Moutere and at least one, or perhaps both, of the Kumeu River labels. On current form, I’d add Spencer Hill Coastal Ridge to the list too.”  Sue Courney, WineoftheWeek.com
